“Laying aside every weight” Hebrews 12:1

Today at Christ Church in our Disciple’s Battle series we learned about “Looking to Jesus” so that we can have victory in our lives and grow in our love for the Lord and one another.  As a young believer I remember thinking to myself, as Rev. John Howe of Truro preached on this passage and challenged us regarding the “weights” in our lives that we needed to “lay aside”.  These weights, in and of themselves may not be sinful, but to you, may be idolatrous and hindering your walk with the Lord.  For me, as a 21 year old believer, I felt that some of the music that I had been listening to was one of the weights, and that I needed to lay them aside for a period of time.  I walked into the book store at Truro and purchased an album by a band named Petra – a mix at that time of REO Speedwagon & Journey.  The song that became my “fight song” for the next 10 years on that “Not of this World” album was Godpleaser.  I still was ( and am) a ZZ Top, Van Halen, and Aerosmith rocker (though several songs of these groups I can no longer in conscience sing), but this “cheesy” 80’s Rock band mightily encouraged me in the Lord when I needed it most and I am thankful for their body of work!  Take a listen, and have a blast from the past, and,  ” let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith!”  (Hebrews 12:1)
